Kinematic Steps/mm & Rotation Distance Mechanics

Translates rotational motor increments into linear movement using pitch, lead, starts, and pulley tooth count.

Lead Screw Steps/mm = (StepsPerRev × Microsteps) / (Pitch × Starts) | Belt Steps/mm = (StepsPerRev × Microsteps) / (BeltPitch × PulleyTeeth)
Real-World Worked Benchmark:

A standard 1.8° motor (200 full steps) with 16 microsteps on a TR8x8 lead screw (8mm lead per revolution): Steps/mm = (200 × 16) / 8 = 400.0 steps/mm. In Klipper, rotation_distance is exactly 8.0 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I ever calibrate Z-steps with a printed calibration cube?
No! Lead screw and belt steps are fixed physical laws determined by gear teeth and thread pitch. Calibrating Z-steps with a printed cube incorrectly compensates for thermal shrinkage and creates compounding dimensional errors.
What is the lead screw pitch of standard T8 lead screws?
Most desktop 3D printers (like Creality Ender 3) use T8x8 lead screws (2mm pitch, 4 starts = 8mm linear travel per revolution). With 1.8° motors (200 steps) and 16 microsteps, standard Z-steps are exactly 400 steps/mm.
What is the step calculation for GT2 belts and 20-tooth pulleys?
GT2 belts have a 2.0mm tooth pitch. A 20-tooth pulley moves 40mm per motor revolution (20 × 2mm). With a 1.8° stepper motor (200 full steps) and 16 microsteps: (200 × 16) / 40 = 80 steps/mm.
How do 0.9° stepper motors change steps per millimeter?
A 0.9° motor has 400 full steps per revolution instead of 200. This exactly doubles the steps per millimeter (e.g. from 80 to 160 steps/mm on standard GT2 belt axes), providing finer theoretical positional resolution.
How do I calculate rotation_distance for belts in Klipper?
In Klipper, belt rotation distance equals pulley tooth count multiplied by belt pitch. For a 20-tooth GT2 pulley: 20 × 2mm = 40.0 mm. For a 16-tooth GT2 pulley: 16 × 2mm = 32.0 mm.
