Quick Rule of Thumb
Standard 1.75mm PLA yields approximately 330–335 meters per 1 kg spool. PETG yields ~327m, and ABS yields ~400m due to lower density.

Filament Geometry & Cylinder Volume

Converting filament weight into length relies on the mathematical cylinder volume equation multiplied by raw material polymer density.

Length (m) = Weight (g) / [Density (g/cm³) × π × (Diameter/2)² / 1000]
Real-World Worked Benchmark:

For 1 kg (1000g) of standard 1.75mm PLA (density 1.24 g/cm³): Radius = 0.0875 cm. Cross section = 0.02405 cm². Volume = 1000 / 1.24 = 806.45 cm³. Length = 806.45 / 0.02405 = 33,532 cm = 335.3 meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many meters of filament are in a 1kg PLA spool?
A standard 1 kg spool of 1.75mm PLA filament contains approximately 335 meters (1,100 feet) of printable filament. For PETG (density 1.27 g/cm³), 1 kg yields about 327 meters.
Why does filament density differ between brands?
Fillers, color pigments, and additives alter density. For instance, carbon-fiber infused PLA is slightly denser (~1.27 g/cm³), while lightweight foaming PLA (LW-PLA) can drop as low as 0.65 g/cm³.
How much does 1 meter of 1.75mm PLA filament weigh?
One meter of 1.75mm standard PLA filament weighs approximately 2.98 grams (1000g / 335.3m ≈ 2.98g/m).
How many meters are in a 1kg spool of 2.85mm filament?
Because 2.85mm filament has more than 2.6 times the cross-sectional area of 1.75mm (6.38 mm² vs 2.41 mm²), a 1kg spool of 2.85mm PLA yields only ~126 meters.
How do I calculate the weight of filament needed from slicer volume?
Multiply the cubic centimeters (cm³) reported by your slicer by polymer density. For example, a 50 cm³ model printed in PETG (1.27 g/cm³) weighs 50 × 1.27 = 63.5 grams.
