Flow Rate / Extrusion Multiplier Calculator

Tune extrusion multiplier using either the OrcaSlicer / Bambu Studio pass modifier or the hollow calibration cube wall thickness method.

PrusaSlicer / SuperSlicer:Extrusion Multiplier: 0.92
Always calibrate E-steps (hardware distance) before tuning flow rate (material melt behavior).

STEP 02

2. Enter Measurements

Input your expected vs measured caliper thickness across all 4 walls.

STEP 03

3. Update Slicer

Enter the new extrusion multiplier in your slicer filament profile.

Flow Rate / Extrusion Multiplier Tuning

Fine-tunes the volumetric flow of plastic to match filament diameter variances and eliminate surface over-extrusion.

New Flow = Current Flow × (Expected Wall Thickness / Measured Average Thickness)
Real-World Worked Benchmark:

Expected wall thickness is 0.80mm (two 0.40mm perimeters). Your calipers measure an average of 0.86mm. New Flow = 100% × (0.80 / 0.86) = 93.02%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between E-steps and Flow Rate?
E-steps is a hardware-level calibration ensuring your extruder motor moves the physical length requested. Flow rate (extrusion multiplier) is a filament-specific slicer adjustment that compensates for die swell, surface drag, and polymer density variations.
What is the standard flow rate for PLA, PETG, and TPU?
High-quality PLA typically runs between 0.95 and 1.00 (95%-100%). PETG often needs 0.92 to 0.96 to prevent nozzle buildup. Flexible TPU frequently requires 1.05 to 1.10 due to drive gear compression.
How do I measure flow rate with calipers?
Print a 2-wall hollow cube without top layers or infill. Measure the wall thickness with digital calipers at 4 points. Calculate: New Flow = Current Flow × (Expected Wall Thickness / Measured Average Thickness).
How does OrcaSlicer pass-1 and pass-2 flow calibration work?
OrcaSlicer uses visual surface overlapping patches: Pass 1 tests coarse steps (-20% to +20%), while Pass 2 tests fine 1% increments. You select the smoothest, gap-free patch without ridges.
Can wrong flow rate cause top surface pillowing or gaps?
Yes. Under-extrusion (flow too low) causes micro-gaps between solid infill lines and perimeter walls. Over-extrusion (flow too high) creates rough ridges, nozzle scraping sounds, and dimensional swelling.
