Standard Metric & Imperial Fastener Hole Reference

Verified drill, tap, heat-set insert, and clearance hole dimensions based on ISO 273 and Ruthex/Voron specifications.

Hole Dimension = Nominal Fastener Major Diameter + Clearance Offset
Real-World Worked Benchmark:

For an M3 screw: Close clearance is 3.20mm, Free clearance is 3.40mm, and a standard M3x5.7 brass heat-set insert requires a 4.00mm hole with 5.7mm depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hole size do I need for an M3 heat-set insert?
For standard M3 brass heat-set inserts (such as Ruthex or Voron specification with an outer diameter of 4.6mm), model a 4.0mm diameter hole with a depth of at least 5.7mm. The hole should have a slight 8-degree taper at the top.
What is the correct temperature for installing brass heat-set inserts?
Set your soldering iron to the printing temperature of the filament: ~220°C for PLA, ~245°C for PETG, and ~260°C for ABS/ASA. Setting temperature too high burns and discolors the plastic.
What hole size should I design for direct self-tapping M3 screws in plastic?
For direct thread-forming screws without brass inserts, design the pilot hole at 2.6mm to 2.7mm in PLA, or 2.7mm to 2.8mm in PETG/ABS to allow screw threads to bite without splitting layers.
What clearance hole diameter is needed for an M3 bolt pass-through?
For a close clearance pass-through hole where the M3 bolt slides freely without binding, design a 3.2mm to 3.4mm diameter hole in CAD.
Why do brass heat-set inserts pull out under tension?
Pull-out occurs when the pilot hole is too large, the boss wall is too thin (minimum recommended wall thickness is 1.5mm to 2.0mm around the insert), or the insert was pressed in without sufficient plastic reflow into its knurled grooves.
